Digital leadership has become an essential skill for educators to embrace as the education landscape continues to shift toward technology and innovation. As the world becomes increasingly digital, it is crucial for educational leaders to model positive digital citizenship and encourage students to develop responsible and ethical digital practices. Eric Sheninger, in his book “Digital Leadership,” emphasizes the importance of creating a culture of innovation in schools and organizations. Let’s explore Sheninger’s ideas on digital leadership as education innovators, considering the ways in which educators can use digital tools to enhance learning experiences, foster collaboration, and create a culture of innovation. Sheninger’s insights help to demonstrate the significance of digital leadership in the modern education landscape and how educators can take an innovative approach to prepare students for success in a digital world.
To develop a technology integration plan for Alvin Independent School District (AISD), it is essential to involve a wide range of stakeholders, including teachers, students, parents, school administrators, technology specialists, and community partners. Teachers and administrators should be involved in the planning process to ensure that the plan aligns with the district’s academic goals and instructional practices. Students should also be included in the planning process to ensure that the technology integration plan meets their needs and enhances their learning experiences. Parents and community partners should also be involved in the planning process to ensure that the plan is inclusive and addresses the needs of all members of the community.
Aligning technology integration with the goal of starting a dual-credit, film production program in partnership with Alvin Community College (ACC) would require careful consideration of the types of technology tools and resources needed to support the program. For example, students in the program may need access to high-quality cameras, video editing software, and other multimedia tools. The digital divide research could be used to identify potential gaps in access to technology resources and develop strategies to address these gaps. For example, the district could explore partnerships with local businesses to provide students with access to technology resources outside of the classroom.
To structure opportunities for learning and capacity building, the district could provide ongoing professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators to learn about new technologies and instructional practices. The district could also establish technology leadership teams to provide support and guidance to teachers and students as they integrate technology into their teaching and learning practices.
To measure the effectiveness of the technology integration plan, the district could focus on outcomes such as student engagement, academic achievement, and the development of 21st-century skills such as collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Data sources such as student surveys, teacher observations, and student work samples could be used to provide feedback and inform ongoing improvements to the technology integration plan.
The model for change that resonates the most with me is the transformational model, which emphasizes the importance of involving all stakeholders in the change process and creating a shared vision for change. This model encourages leaders to be proactive in addressing challenges and to foster a culture of innovation and collaboration. In the context of AISD, this model could be applied by involving all stakeholders in the technology integration planning process, providing ongoing support and professional development opportunities, and focusing on the development of a shared vision for the district’s future.
Digital citizenship, forward-thinking leadership, and the creation of a culture of innovation are key concepts that must be integrated into the development of a technology integration plan for AISD. By involving a wide range of stakeholders, aligning technology integration with academic goals, addressing potential gaps in technology access, providing ongoing learning opportunities, and focusing on outcomes such as engagement and 21st-century skill development, the district can create a comprehensive and effective technology integration plan. The transformational model for change provides a framework for implementing these strategies and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration in the Alvin community. Through a commitment to digital leadership, AISD can prepare its students for success in an ever-evolving digital landscape.

March 27, 2023 at 12:59 amHello Eric,
First, I really like that you’ve included students as part of the stakeholders and planners in this agenda.
I’m curious, how do you see the students being active stakeholders in the task? How do you decide which students would be included in this process and how would you or the district motivate or communicate to them the importance of digital citizenship?
Thank you for your post, it was very inspiring.
Best,
Dannette

March 27, 2023 at 4:07 amHi, Dannette. I would like to include students who may already be taking related classes or have expressed interest in doing so. The success of the idea will depend a lot on student interest. Of course, it is also true that students would need some idea of what the opportunity is before they can decide if it is of interest to them. Thanks for your comment.
